The Hills Are Alive With These Properties on Booking.com
This March marks the 55th anniversary since the world-famous, Oscar-winning, musical drama captivated audiences around the globe. Five and half decades later, the hills are still very much alive for adults and children alike, with today’s youngest generation still growing up with the Von Trapp family and learning all the words to Do-Re-Mi by heart. With a combination of a strong, based on real life, storyline, catchy music and beautiful Austrian scenery, this movie has always been and will stay one of the world's favorite things.
For those travelers who want to experience the film for themselves, a trip to Austria is a must do. Not only is Austria known for its beautiful mountain landscapes spotted with edelweiss, the country also offers stunning cities to explore. One of the original filming locations of the musical is Schloss Leopoldskron. Located in Salzburg, this former palace is now an exclusive boutique hotel near Leopoldskroner Weiher Lake. It is at this iconic spot where Captain von Trapp heard his kids singing for the first time.
This hotel offers scenic Austrian mountain views and cozy, modern rooms. After a good night's rest, guests can enjoy a breakfast buffet that is served in the majestic breakfast room. And when weather conditions are nice, guests can also start their day with breakfast on the panorama balcony. Drinks and cakes are offered at the Meierhof Café which also features a terrace with views to the garden and to the Leopoldskroner Weiher Lake.
The hotel is just 1.2 miles from Salzburg’s historic city center where guests can stroll through the authentic, baroque style streets and visit the Hohensalzburg Fortress. For travelers who would like to learn more about the lives of the family Von Trapp and the making of the movie can join one of the many guided tours in the city. And to top off the musical element, Salzburg is also the birthplace of famed composer Mozart, which makes the city a music lover's dream destination. Salzburg is a perfect destination for a city weekend getaway and for travelers interested in sightseeing and to explore historic scenery and castles.
For travelers who prefer outdoor activities over city trips, the hills are also alive in the United States. Travelers to the US can experience a piece of Austria and in Stowe, Vermont at the Trapp Family Lodge. The property is owned and operated by the original Von Trapp family.
In the early 1940’s, the Von Trapp family toured around the United States before they eventually settled in Stowe and opened a family lodge. After a devastating fire in 1980, the original structure of the lodge was replaced by the current Trapp Family Lodge. From generation to generation, the lodge has been managed by Von Trapp family members, and it currently still is.
It comes as no surprise that the Trapp Family Lodge is an Austrian-style alpine lodge and offers stunning mountain views, just a 20-minute drive away from downtown Stowe. A perfect getaway for travelers who love outdoor activities and hiking. In the area surrounding the Trapp Family Lodge, guests can easily discover cross-country skiing trails, local wineries and scenic hiking paths. And after a day of exploring, guests can have a drink in The Wine Cellar and Von Trapp Brewing, serving only the best wines and lagers brewed onsite in a state-of-the-art facility.
