Paws for Thought: 2020 Will See Travelers Putting Their Pets in the Priority Lane
Recent research from Booking.com reveals that over seven in 10 (72%) global pet owners consider their pets to be a fully-fledged member of the family and over half (51%) admit that they would enjoy their vacation more if they got to bring their pet along. With this in mind, in 2020 we can expect to see to see pet-owners around the world making a conscious effort to put their pet(s) in the priority lane and bring these cherished family members on vacation with them. Just under half (42%) of global pet owners even admit that in the coming year they would choose their holiday destinations based on whether they can take their pets.
In order to meet the needs of travelers seeking the purrfect pet-friendly accommodation it will be more and more important for pet-friendly accommodations around the world to create a welcoming environment for their guests and their precious companions. Half (50%) of pet owners globally currently find their is a lack of clear and quality information around traveling with pets abroad. The year ahead will see accommodations offer pet-friendly amenities to cater for travelers’ pets’ needs, with the top five amenities for a paws-itively fun and furry vacation, according to the pet owners themselves, being:
- Space for pets to run and play – 39%
- Veterinary support available – 31%
- A friendly and warm environment – 26%
- Pet-friendly activities – 21%
- Pet sitting or walking services available – 19%

Research commissioned by Booking.com and independently conducted among a sample of adults who have taken a trip in the last 12 months/plan to take a trip in the next 12 months. In total 22,000 respondents were polled (including 1,000 each from Australia, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Japan, China, Brazil, India, US, UK, Russia, Indonesia, Colombia and South Korea; and 500 each from New Zealand, Thailand, Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Hong Kong, Croatia, Taiwan, Mexico, Netherlands, Sweden, Singapore and Israel). Respondents completed an online survey between 9th August to 28th August 2019.
