While travel may have been put on pause, that hasn’t stopped many from dreaming about their next vacation and rediscovering the joys of travel, especially when it comes to researching and deciding their travel plans. And for many Brits, their first trips post-lockdown are taking shape in the form of the great British getaway, discovering that they don’t have to travel far to experience the world and to create great memories.

With the ever-evolving complexities of travel restrictions and quarantine rules, the convenience of a domestic stay has proved more appealing than ever, with 35% of British travelers intending to take a domestic trip in the next three months*. For many, they’ve already rediscovered that the best trips are the ones closer to home. With that in mind, we reveal the top UK destinations first booked by British travelers after the lifting of Coronavirus related restrictions**, uncovering the trends of what British travelers did first as well as inspire those who are still looking to take that first trip, whenever they feel safe to do so.

London

Top on Brits first trip list was rediscovering the charm of England’s capital. London is a popular destination with locals and international travelers alike for its rich culture, history and delicious eats. Following recent closures, many of London’s major museums and galleries have already announced their reopening dates, meaning visitors can safely enjoy a socially distant day out, and without the crowds of international tourists. Outdoors, visitors can stroll along the famous River Thames, passing the Houses of Parliament and stop for a bite to eat on the famous Southbank.

Where to stay: Across the river in North London, STAY Camden offers chic accommodation options with views of the city’s skyline. Walking distance from Camden’s famous market, the apartments on offer here range from one to three-bedroom spaces, all equipped with a living room and a kitchen boasting all the mod cons to make this property the perfect base to explore.

Liverpool

Many travelers are realising the beauty of exploring right next door. For some Brits that means having booked or already taken a trip to Liverpool. This bustling city is famous for its trade routes, musical history and love of football. Visitors can take a stroll around the famous Albert Dock, admiring the iconic listed buildings or perhaps even taking in some culture at the Tate Liverpool. Foodie travelers will be spoilt for choice at Duke Street, Liverpool’s latest communal food hall or along the shopping street of Bold Street now famous for the eats on offer.

Where to stay: Just a short stroll from Bold Street visitors can find the perfect home away from home at Quest Liverpool City Centre. This modern accommodation offers modern décor and facilities in a central location. Travelers can even opt to enjoy a continental or a à la carte breakfast as part of their stay before setting off on a busy day sightseeing.

Brighton & Hove

For some travelers, that first trip has been all about rediscovering the great British seaside and the coastal destinations right next door. Brighton & Hove has proved particularly popular for its lush pebble beaches and urban city feel. Brighton is famous for its amalgamation of cultures and identities, with a rich LGTBQ+ community, hipster hangouts and trendy spots and even its family-friendly pull. Visitors can explore all facets of this destination's eclectic style, making time for the bohemian streets of North Laine, the almost village-esque pace of Kemptown and the swanky style of Seven Dials. Slightly further down the shore, Hove boasts a quieter seafront for paddlers, but still boasts an enviable selection of artisan shops, gin bars and restaurants along Church Road.

Where to stay: For a particularly chic stay that lives up to the city’s cool surrounds, look no further than Artist Residence Brighton. With its 25 individually decorated rooms and quirky artwork throughout, this hotel spans across two Grade II listed Regency townhouses. And with a restaurant, tapas bar, cocktail bar and ping-pong room all onsite, travelers will have to be sure to remind themselves of Brighton’s gems to ensure they still step out!

Edinburgh

Arguably best known as the home of the world’s biggest arts festival, Edinburgh isn’t without its other delights throughout the rest of the year, which have appealed to travelers about to embark on their first trip as restrictions ease. From booklovers to history buffs to those who enjoy a wee tipple, Edinburgh is a rich city with something on offer for every traveler. Travelers can visit the Edinburgh Castle which towers over the city and is home to the oldest crown jewels in Britain or take in a performance at the Royal Lyceum Theatre, which is rumoured to be haunted by Shakespearean actress, Ellen Terry. For the more green-fingered traveler the Royal Botanic Garden is worth a visit.

Where to stay: With a prime location in Edinburgh’s New Town, Eden Locke offers great quality rooms with a pop of pastel colour. For those looking for a luxurious stay, this hotel offers not only top-class surrounds, but even spa treatments massages onsite. For those that haven’t yet had their dose of educational excursions, Eden Locke hosts a series of cultural programmes throughout the week, which guests are invited to attend.

Bristol

This creative city has proved a tempting first trip destination for many Brits. Amongst the serenity of Somerset surrounds, this innovative city is gaining a reputation for its foodie endeavours and cultural diversity. When exploring the city, visitors can follow in the footsteps of Banksy and see some of his works such as the ‘Girl with a Pierced Eardrum’ or visit the trendy Wapping Wharf to find converted shipping containers now home to Indy retailers.

Where to stay: A contemporary boutique hotel set in a Georgian townhouse, Number 38 Clifton offers stylish rooms with views of both the Clifton Downs and Bristol city centre. This chic stay is the perfect base to meander through the greenery of the Downs or visit the nearby Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery.
