Castle stays top Canadians’ wish list of unique accommodations, according to new survey

  • One in three Canadians dream of living the royal life.

Perhaps it's Canada's ties to the British monarchy or the popularity of shows like Downton Abbey, but it seems Canadians' fascination with the royals are driving them to seek out the royal experience for themselves. A recent survey by, the world's number one accommodation site, found a stay at a castle topped Canadians' list of dream accommodations.

The Epic Accommodations survey gave 1,200 Canadians the option to choose among some of the world's most interesting accommodations and, while castles proved to be the runaway winner, Canadians also expressed their preference for themed hotels, boats and farm stays. Perhaps not surprisingly, more Canadians would rather stay in a converted prison than an igloo.

Canadians also ranked in the world's top five most adventurous when it came to accommodation choices, ranking higher than Americans and Australians. One in three Canadians  reported having stayed in an unusual accommodation, including a tuberculosis sanatorium in China, a pyramid, a pirate ship, a converted fort, a convent and a cave hotel.

Today launched a new platform called Epic Accommodations to help travellers unearth some of the world's most interesting accommodations and inspire them to embrace adventure when booking their next stay.
