Destinations for Half Term Holidays from Booking.com

October Half Term is the perfect time for a family getaway. The nights have drawn in and the temperature is crisp, so now is the perfect time for a holiday with your nearest and dearest to relax and rejuvenate. The key to the perfect half term break is finding a destination suitable for everyone that won’t break the bank. Booking.com, the global leader in connecting travellers with the widest choice of incredible places to stay, delved into its 1.4 million properties to compile the ultimate Affordable Half Term Holiday Guide[1] so there’s something for everyone, from fly and flop families (those who love to recline on the beach) to those looking for a holiday brimming with activities.

[1] Categorised as ‘affordable’ based on a maximum price at the time of researching of £140 per night for two adults and two children

Brecon Beacons National Park – Abercraf, Wales

The Brecon Beacons National Park encompasses mountains, moorlands, castles and waterfalls across its approx. 520 square miles. Whether you’ve been once or one hundred times, there will always be something new to discover. The park is also awash with activities, from visiting the Cantref Adventure Farm to kayaking, paddle boarding and caving.

Where to stay: Located within the Brecon Beacons National Park lies the Pentre Riding Stables, a 4-star guesthouse surrounded by the stunning countryside. Offering on-site riding stables, each of the rooms are light and spacious.

Giant’s Causeway – Bushmills, Northern Ireland

Ireland is a great destination for both adults and children alike – home of Bushmills Whiskey for the former and full of magic and legends for the latter. A must-see area for all ages, though, is the Giant’s Causeway. According to Gaelic mythology, the Irish giant Fionn mac Cumhaill was challenged to fight the Scottish giant, Benandonner. Cumhaill built the Giant’s Causeway so that they could meet. After visiting this national wonder, a trip to Bushmills Whiskey distillery is a must for the adults.

Where to stay: Located a 10-minute walk from the Giant’s Causeway are the Ballylinny Holiday Cottages. The 4-star cottages offer self-catering accommodation with a fully-equipped kitchen. Enjoy gorgeous views across the countryside and take advantage of the on-site tennis court and children’s playground.

Fly and Flop – Gran Canaria, Canary Islands

For some people, a holiday means total relaxation with warm sun, a good book and the sound of the rolling sea. Gran Canaria offers everything you could want if you’re a fly and flop family with average temperatures in October of 26°C and gorgeous, white sands – you’re guaranteed to return feeling sunkissed and refreshed.

Where to stay: Hotel Parque is located in the island’s capital of Las Palmas near the historic areas of Vegueta and Triana. Located on the beachfront, you can be from your bedroom to your beach-bed in no time at all. The hotel offers a restaurant with sea views as well as a central location close to a multitude of restaurants, bars and shops to explore.

Northern Lights – Reykjavik, Iceland

For a truly memorable half term, head to Iceland to take in the Northern Lights. The stuff of myth and legend, the Northern Lights are visible in Iceland from September to mid-April so October is prime time to view this aurora phenomenon.

Where to stay: Grotta Lighthouse, located in the north-westernmost point of the capital, is the ideal spot to view the northern lights on a clear evening. The Heart of Reykjavik Apartments are a mere 2-mile drive from the lighthouse and offers self-catering apartments with a fully-equipped kitchen and lounge area.

Ancient Rome – Rome, Italy

Pizza, pasta and gelato – the three keys to happiness, no? Rome makes for a fantastic family holiday as, not only does the food entice all ages, but there are many things to see and do from the Trevi Fountain to the Colosseum and the Vatican City.

Where to stay: Cappellari Charme Apartment is a two-bedroom apartment offering self-catered accommodation in the heart of Rome. A mere 10-minute walk from the Pantheon and 20-minutes from the Trevi Fountain, the property boasts garden views and free Wi-Fi as well as a self-service breakfast included and a complimentary bottle of red wine on arrival – for the adults only!
